How crews across the region are preparing for snowstorm

SCHUYLKILL TOWNSHIP, Pa. (WPVI) -- While the exact amount of snow is still unknown, communities across the region aren't taking any chances.

Public works and street crews are busy putting equipment in place to respond to whatever the storm brings.

The snow chains are being attached, and the plows are being greased as crews prepare for battle against Mother Nature.

"We'll use our fire station. We'll set up two teams of crews so they can rotate back and forth," said Jean Krack with the Borough of Phoenixville. "We'll keep them here. We'll have food, shelter, showers, and bedding. We'll take care of them."

In Phoenixville, a snow emergency is expected to be announced on Friday and go into effect Saturday. That means vehicles need to be removed from snow emergency routes.

"We haven't declared the actual time yet because we are following what you guys are saying on weather reports, trying to figure out the best approach, but we want to give 24 hours' notice to everybody," added Krack.

In Lansdale, the expectation is that this will be more of a plowing event. Crews will apply some salt before the storm's arrival, but most of it afterwards.

"We'll have all hands on deck, including borrowing a few staff from our fellow utility departments if the forecast holds," said Jason Van Dame, the director of Public Works. "We'll need all the help we can get."

In Schuylkill Township, hilly roads are a concern and will get extra attention and salt.

And road-clearing crews are asking the public to help them do their job.

"Please do not leave your trash cans out," said Schuylkill Township roadmaster Robert Falkenstein. "Please do not park your cars on the road. Let us clear the roads and wait to do your driveways until we go curb to curb."

And all the public works experts had the same message: stay off the roadways, especially during the height of the storm. Allow your municipal workers to do their jobs safely.
