A young woman was left to die on the street.
The tragedy happened around 2:30 a.m. in the 4800 block of Levick Street.
Witnesses told police that the driver was speeding when the victim was struck.
You can hear the impact in security video obtained by Action News.
In the video, you can vaguely see what police describe as a dark colored SUV speeding away from the scene.
The victim is believed to be in her late 20s to early 30s, and was hit with such force that she was knocked out of both of her sneakers.
"There are numerous broken car parts and pieces we believe were broken off of the striking vehicle from the impact," said Chief Inspector Scott Small with the Philadelphia Police Department.
We spoke to a neighbor who says speeding is a regular occurrence as cars exit the Tacony-Palmyra Bridge.
"They keep happening, and they get closer and closer to home. I mean, you can't get closer to home than this," she said.
She says she's witnessed fatalities before.
"There was a guy who was hit on his bike that was killed. There was a head-on collision on the bridge," she said.
The woman called for the driver to do the right thing.
"My heart goes out to the family that has to deal with this. It shouldn't have happened. Should never happen. Hopefully the person turns himself in," she said.
Police say the suspect was driving a black or dark-colored SUV. They are hoping surveillance cameras picked up a model or year of the vehicle.
