Police warn NJ residents about 'jugging' after calculated theft

WOODBURY, N.J. (WPVI) -- Woodbury police are working to bring a suspect back to New Jersey who stands accused of a crime trend called "jugging."

Surveillance video shows the victim pulling over and parking, and the suspect vehicle that had been following them parks nearby. After the victim leaves the car, someone gets out of the suspect's car.

"They reported their window was broken out and several thousand dollars was taken out of the car," said Woodbury Police Det. Nick Cacciola.

Police say the victim had just gone to the TD Bank in Mantua on October 5 and made a stop in Woodbury next.

Woodbury police say this is a case of "jugging," where suspects stake out local banks in rented or stolen cars, then follow anyone they think may be carrying a large sum of money.

"Down in Houston, this is something that occurs weekly," said Cacciola.

Police caught up with the suspect, Reginald Chatman, 24, of Houston, in Oklahoma City, where he remains in custody.

Police say Chatman has done this before.

Dashcam video from police in Arizona shows Chatman and an alleged accomplice in 2024. Police say they stole $50,000 from a man who said he had just received a large settlement from a law firm.

The victim chased the suspects, and eventually, police caught up with them after a collision and a foot chase.

Woodbury police say they want people to keep an eye out, given that they're starting to see this kind of activity here.

"Make sure you conceal your money. Don't be seen walking out of a bank with a bank bag or an envelope," said Cacciola.

In another incident here in Woodbury last year, police say a suspect from Houston, Texas, committed a similar crime.

Police here in New Jersey are working on extraditing Chatman back to New Jersey to face charges.

Police also say there were other people involved in this scheme, and more charges could be coming.
