World War II hero Lieutenant Gerald J. Melofchik laid to rest in Bucks Co. 81 years after his death

NEWTOWN, Pa. (WPVI) -- A World War II hero was laid to rest in Bucks County, 81 years after he was killed in action.

Chopper 6 was over Route 1 Tuesday morning as the remains of Lieutenant Gerald J. Melofchik were given a police escort.

They were taken from a funeral home in Ambler, Pennsylvania to Melofchik's final resting place at Washington Crossing National Cemetery in Newtown, Pennsylvania.

The lieutenant with the U.S. Army Air Force was killed in action in August,1944 when the B-17 he was piloting was struck by anti-aircraft fire and crashed in France.

His remains were finally found in June 2025.
