CENTER CITY (WPVI) -- The city of Philadelphia is celebrating International Literacy Day.

It was established by the United Nations 51 years ago, with the goal of helping all people reach their full potential, regardless of geography, race, gender or class.

Mayor Jim Kenney delivered remarks during Friday's event at city hall.

He says there will be a number of city-wide education events throughout the entire month of September.
