At a news conference in west Philadelphia the school district was given a "green ribbon award" by the U.S. Department of Education.
Only 9 school districts across the country receive a green ribbon.
One reason Philadelphia was chosen, was for its many school playgrounds that now incorporate green space and gardens for students.
