Truck crashes into home in Egg Harbor City, NJ

EGG HARBOR CITY, New Jersey (WPVI) -- An out-of-control dump truck driver crashed into a South Jersey home on Monday morning.

It happened at about 7:45 a.m. on Route 30 (White Horse Pike) and Antwerp Avenue in Egg Harbor City, New Jersey.



According to police, a dump truck and another vehicle collided.

That's when the dump truck driver, who has been identified as 69-year-old Rogelio Serrano, lost control and continued traveling westbound. The truck went off the road and crashed into a house.

Action News obtained surveillance video that shows the moment the truck plowed into the home.

A crushed car was being towed away. The truck also suffered front-end damage.



Officials said Richard Beck, 80, was inside the home at the time of the crash.

The impact of the collision caused the floor to give way, dropping him into the basement. He was not seriously injured.

Serrano is a long-time employee of J Domenico & Son Excavating based out of Hammonton, New Jersey. According to the company, he was off the job at the time of crash and was released from the hospital following the collision.

Action News spoke with neighbor Anita Wagner who was stopped at a stop sign nearby when the crash occurred.

She said she saw a transformer explode and the aftermath of the truck smashing into the home.

"I honestly can't believe what I still saw," Wagner said.

"The fact that nobody else was injured, nobody was seriously injured, is indeed miraculous," said Egg Harbor City Police Chief Marcella Aylwin.

According to witnesses at the scene, there were people in the home at the time of the crash who came outside after the impact.

Wagner said good Samaritans who were driving by stopped to help.

"A great community of people came together to make sure everybody was safe," Wagner said.

The crash remains under investigation.
