North Carolina woman trying to change law on sexual consent

RALEIGH, N.C. (WPVI) -- A North Carolina woman is fighting to change a state law that essentially says that "no" doesn't always mean "no."

North Carolina state law that says women cannot legally revoke consent during sex, even if the encounter turns violent.

This is very personal for Amy Guy, who is the woman spearheading the effort to change it. Last year, she says her estranged husband, Jonathan, was drunk and demanded sex.

"Since he was getting angry, I figured it would be better to go ahead and agree to the sex because I figured that was the safer thing for me to do," she recalled.

"Everyone understands the law to say no means no, but the reality is no doesn't mean no if you don't say it initially. If you don't say no right at the outset, you can't say no later. We fully believe Amy was raped, but the law didn't help her," said Amy's attorney, Kristopher Hilscher.

Because of that old law, Jonathan Guy's charges were lowered to assault.

Amy says she hopes other women get the protection they need.
