Pa. farm and food bank team up to turn trash into treasure

JAMISON, Pennsylvania (WPVI) -- A Bucks County farm and food bank have teamed up to connect the dots in a cycle of food waste and feed families in need.

The idea sparked over the winter when Hidden Valley Farm in Jamison was covered in snow. Owner Eric Kretschman wished he could feed his chickens more greenery instead of grain.

He walked into the Warminster Food Bank with a proposition: to trade their food waste for his fresh eggs.

The food bank was thrilled to send their outdated food products somewhere besides a landfill.

Whether it's celery, grapes, or peppers, the chickens have a feast with the food deemed suitable to eat.

"If you have a healthy chicken that's well-fed and happy, you're going to get a great egg," said Kretschman.

Hidden Valley Farm then procures, washes, and packages dozens of eggs to donate back to Warminster Food Bank.

"It's a huge help because right now, the cost of eggs is a burden to the food bank," said Brian Foedisch, Director of Operations.
