Water main break buckles street, leads to detours in Queen Village

Wednesday, December 21, 2016
QUEEN VILLAGE (WPVI) -- Efforts to repair a broken water main continue along Columbus Boulevard in the Queen Village section of Philadelphia.

Officials tell Action News a 12-inch main ruptured Tuesday evening along the southbound lanes of the boulevard near Queen Lane.

The break caused part of the street to buckle. An SUV was disabled when it struck some of the ruptured asphalt.

The break also released a large amount of water in the area, prompting police to shut down the southbound lanes of Columbus Boulevard between Fitzwater and Christian streets for several hours.

At least one apartment building in the area was reported to be without water service.

Water department crews arrived to begin repairs around 9 p.m. Tuesday.

That repair work was expected to resume Wednesday morning.
