Officials say an 18-year-old student from Pitman High School and a friend tried to swim across the lake, however, the teen went under the water and did not reappear.

On Monday afternoon, school officials released a statement identifying the teen as Victor Rodriguez.

"It is with deep regret that we inform you about a recent loss to our school community. Earlier today, we learned that Victor Rodriguez, a senior at Pitman High School, passed away after a recent drowning incident. On behalf of the board of education, administration, and staff, we offer our sincerest condolences to Victor's family and friends," said Superintendent Steven Crispin.

Officials said the other male swimming with the teen made an effort to rescue his friend, but was not able to.

"Another bystander tried as well and they contacted 911," said Ryan Pierson, Borough of Pitman Deputy Emergency Manager Coordinator.

Police said navigating the lake is challenging. It is more than 10-feet deep in parts and it has high vegetation. Swimming is not allowed.

"It's the vegetation that exists in the lake. It's very thick and deeply rooted but comes very close to the surface as well," said Police Chief Dan McAteer.

Rodriguez was set to graduate on Wednesday.

"It's terribly heartbreaking. We are blessed though from the standpoint we have such a close knit community, such a close knit high school," said Pitman Mayor Michael Razze.

Pitman High School canceled all final exams for Monday, but opened the building for any students who needed support. There's also a prayer vigil for Rodriguez planned for Monday evening at the Pitman United Methodist Church.
