Mother charged in boy's murder

A mother is charged with murdering her six year-old son, who died due to his throat being slashed.Martina Harding, age 42, of the Oak Valley section of Deptford Township, Gloucester County was charged with the murder of her six year-old son, Jared.

Mrs. Harding, who is hospitalized at Cooper Medical Center in Camden after surgery to treat a self-inflicted neck wound, is charged with first-degree murder, aggravated assault, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose and endangering the welfare of a child.

While in the hospital, she will be under guard by officers of the Gloucester County Sheriff's Office and the Deptford Township Police Department.

Jared Harding, one of two children in the single-family residence where the Hardings live, was fatally wounded in the living room of the house shortly before 7:30 a.m. Saturday morning.

His throat was slashed and he died shortly after he was transported to Underwood-Memorial Hospital in Woodbury, NJ.

A 911 call was made to police by the Harding's nine-year-old daughter at the direction of her father, Christian Harding.

A search warrant executed by investigators at the Harding home this afternoon resulted in recovery of a 13-inch kitchen knife that is believed to be the murder weapon.

The homicide is being investigated by the Major Crimes and Crime Scene units of the Gloucester County Prosecutor's Office and the Deptford Township Police Department.

Harding is being held on $500,000 bail.
