Lower speed limit on part of Parkway

Drivers will soon have to slow down on a stretch of the Garden State Parkway in Monmouth and Ocean counties. Starting March 1, speed limits between mileposts 80 and 100 will be dropped from 65 mph to 55 mph.

The reduction comes after the New Jersey Turnpike Authority - which also operated the Parkway - analyzed five years of accident data and determined a high rate of serious accidents along that stretch.

Besides lowering the speed limit in the area, officials plan engineering and design improvements for the stretch to help reduce accidents. The Authority expects to spend $1.2 million over next year for the interim repairs and long-term design work.
