Nassau County detectives say the 21-year-old crook entered the Roosevelt gas station Sunday afternoon, made a purchase and then pointed an unloaded gun at the cashier and demanded money.
The cashier called out to a friend in the gas station's back office.
Police say the friend grabbed a beer bottle from a shelf and smashed the robber over the head, knocking him down. They say the cashier and his friend jumped on the robber and held him until officers arrived to arrest him.
There was one other customer in the gas station at the time. No injuries have been reported.
Police say the crook is being charged with attempted robbery and possession of a dangerous weapon and will be arraigned Monday.
