British banker sentenced for Enron scheme

A federal judge has sentenced a British banker to 37 months in prison for his role in a fraudulent scheme with former Enron Chief Financial Officer Andrew Fastow.David Birmingham was the first of three British bankers to be sentenced Friday in Houston by U.S. District Judge Ewing Werlein Jr. Two others - Giles Darby and Gary Mulgrew - were to be sentenced later Friday.

The three men each had pleaded guilty to one count of wire fraud in November as part of a plea agreement.

Enron's demise wiped out thousands of jobs and more than $2 billion in pension plans.
