Emergency chief steps down after 911 mess

DOYLESTOWN, Pa. - March 4, 2008 The case involved a woman who's bed was on fire. She was put on hold.

The call took six rings to answer, and then nearly half a minute more, before she could report the emergency.

Brenda Orr of Doylestown was bedridden, and died in the January 29th fire.

County commissioner Jim Cawley says 911 director Brent Wiggins is retiring now. He had apparently been contemplating doing so next year.

Separately, Cawley said six dispatchers and three supervisors who could have answered the call were given various length suspensions without pay.
