The U.S. military says an American soldier has been killed and four others wounded in a rocket or mortar attack south of Baghdad. At least 3,993 members of the U.S. military have died since the war started five years ago.

A statement says the soldier died of wounds sustained from indirect fire on Friday. The military uses the term to describe a rocket or mortar attack.

The statement didn't provide more details about the location, and the area south of the capital has a volatile mix of Sunni and Shiite extremists. Violence has declined in the area, but attacks continue against U.S. and Iraqi forces.
