The former top aide to Detroit's mayor has pleaded not guilty to charges she lied under oath about an affair. Former Chief of Staff Christine Beatty appeared Tuesday afternoon in a downtown courtroom. A not guilty plea was entered on her behalf on charges of perjury, conspiracy, obstruction of justice and misconduct in office.

Beatty and Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick are accused of lying under oath about an affair and their roles in the firing of a top police official.

Kilpatrick is expected to be arraigned shortly.
