Pricey cleanup for beach munitions removal

SURF CITY - April 4, 2008 The Army Corps of Engineers initiated a sweep last year after 1,100 World War I and II-era explosives were discovered. The munitions were pumped ashore during a beach replenishment project in Surf City and Ship Bottom.

The Asbury Park Press says a 74-page Army Corps report says there are more fuses beneath the sand and another cleanup is needed.

A corps spokesman says beaches would remain open during the summer and any cleanup would likely begin in October.

Munitions located in dunes that were built up during the replenishment would not be removed.
