DelDOT warns of thefts of metal grates from roads

DOVER, Del. (AP) - April 22, 2008

The Delaware Department of Transportation says thieves are stealing storm grates, guardrails and light poles, putting drivers in danger.

DelDOT says more than 70 storm grates have been stolen statewide by thieves trying to take advantage of high scrap metal prices.

Even manhole covers are popular targets.

DelDOT says it is addressing the problem by installing storm grates that are harder to remove and alerting salvage yards to be on the lookout for anyone trying to sell them.
