No criminal charges will be filed in the case of two off-duty police officers in Deptford Township who were cleaning their guns when one of the weapons went off, striking an officer's 2-year-old son. The Gloucester County Prosecutor's Office found that Officer Michael Riggs was negligent in the way he handled his weapon, but said his actions did not rise to the level of a crime.

The bullet wounded the son of Officer Wayne Muhlbaier on April 17. The child was struck in the jaw and underwent surgery, but has since been released from the hospital.

Authorities say Riggs, who had been drinking, was not legally drunk. He has been suspended with pay.

Muhlbaier, who was initially placed on administrative leave, has returned to active duty.
