An underground electrical fire has shutdown a portion of Harvard University. The fire was first reported around 2:30 this morning, and flames and smoke continued to spew from at least one manhole on Harvard Square for hours. The fire broke out in the area of Massachusetts Avenue and Dunster Street early Friday morning.

The university evacuated a one building in the area as a precaution.

Authorities say the fire is the result of a cable malfunction. However an exact cause has not yet been determined.

No injuries have been reported.
