Democratic Sen. Barack Obama is reporting more than $37 million in the bank for his presidential run at the start of May compared to nearly $22 million for Republican Sen. John McCain. Obama raised more than $31 million for the primary in April, a substantial sum but smaller than previous monthly totals. McCain raised nearly $18 million in April, his best fundraising month yet.

The Obama campaign reported having nearly 1.5 million donors.

Campaign finance reports had to be filed Tuesday with the Federal Election Commission. Obama's campaign released main fundraising figures Tuesday evening. He and rival Hillary Rodham Clinton's campaign were expected to file full reports later in the day.
