Stretch of Broad Street shutdown thru May

It's going to take more patience to drive in Center City. That's because as of now, Broad Street is closed, and it'll stay closed until the end of the month. The closures affect Broad Street northbound between JFK Boulevard and Race Street and Broad Street southbound between Race and Arch - a stretch of road used by some 30,000 drivers a day.

The closure is necessary due to demolition of the 121 North Broad Street building. The building's being taken down to make way for the Convention Center expansion. Unfortunately for drivers, the building can't be imploded or taken down floor-by-floor, so workers will be swinging a wrecking ball.

The demolition will be going on 24/7 between now and May 31st. If you're driving downtown and your patience is on edge, try to think of the greater good. The $700-million convention center expansion is expected to bring some 2,500 construction jobs and 2,000 permanent jobs to the city's hospitality industry.

Extra traffic police have been assigned to the area and detours are marked. But your best bet if you have to come downtown may be SEPTA. Under Broad Street the subway is still running.
