Guardsmen engaged at the Zoo

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - May 24, 2008 22-year-old Aaron Johnston planned a day at the Philadelphia Zoo just full of surprises for his girlfriend of three years, 23-year-old Angela Hussler.

"When he said he had a surprise and were feeding the turtles. I was like wow. I never got to do anything like that," said Hussler.

She and Aaron share a love of turtles. So today, with a crowd of zoo visitors watching, she got the chance to meet the zoo's tortoises face to face.

"They're all pretty friendly. A couple are kind of shy, but they're all pretty friendly," she said.

Angela and Aaron are both National Guardsmen. Angela is preparing to deploy to Iraq as early as January - Aaron will leave not long after that. But before they head overseas, Aaron had an even bigger surprise in mind today: Making Angela his fiancée. So after the tortoises had their lunch, Aaron led Angela to the top of a small hill inside the reptile exhibit. He got down on one knee… and proposed.

The groom-to-be's mother, Karen Johnston tells us, "They're both such good kids. They met in college, they are serving their country. They were just met for meant for each other."

Angela heads overseas in a few months and the young couple would like to be husband and wife before then. So, no moving like turtles now. They've got a wedding to plan.
