Gov. Ed Rendell's budget chief is leaving state government to oversee the Philadelphia School District's finances. Budget Secretary Michael Masch says he'll start a new job July 1 as the district's chief business officer.

Masch has been Rendell's top budget advisor since the governor took office in 2003. Masch's new boss will be Arlene Ackerman, who takes over as the district's chief executive next month.

State lawmakers have never finalized a budget before July during Rendell's tenure. But Rendell spokesman Chuck Ardo says other budget office officials will be able to continue working on the spending plan even after Masch leaves.
