The heat wave is coming

June 6, 2008 It may be warmer and more humid than usual for June 6, but for visitors to Main Street in Manayunk it was just fine.

Tables at outdoor restaurants were filled with people enjoying good food, a little wine or a brew, and it seemed the perfect way to end the work week

Earlier this evening the sounds of a big band filled the air in Moorestown, New Jersey as young and old, families and friends, enjoyed a strawberry festival sponsored by the First Presbyterian Church. Nothing like juicy red strawberries, cake and ice cream, to remind everyone that summer is here even if the calendar disagrees

Tonight in Ocean City crowds strolled the boardwalk with the forecast calling for a heat wave, merchants are looking for a big weekend.

Of course, the heat is serious and dangerous especially for the elderly and young children. A heat warning is already in effect for the weekend and Philadelphia's corporation for aging will have enhanced outreach in effect.

The heat helpline will be activated so callers can get help in locating a cool center to spend the day or if they suffer a medical emergency.

If it is determined to be a medical emergency the call will be transferred to 911.

The Philadelphia helpline number is 215-765-9040.

No matter where you live, though, it's a good idea to activate the buddy system check on your elderly neighbors or family members.

Make sure they are drinking fluids and make sure their home are ventilated.
