How fast can a tsunami travel?

Dateline article| David Murphy|

A tsunami can travel more than 500 miles-per-hour across the open ocean, roughly as fast as a commercial airliner. In 1964, a tsunami made it all the way from Valdez, Alaska, to the northern shores of Hawaii in less than 7 hours. In 1960, another tsunami traveled all the way from Chile, South America, to New Zealand in about 15 hours.
