The damage caused by a tsunami happens quickly, with the water taking only seconds to cross a beach and wash inland. But there is often more than one wave in any tsunami event. In fact, there have been cases where people see the first wave coming and take cover, only to be killed or injured 45 minutes later when a second wave hits survivors picking through the rubble left behind by the first wave.
