Protests planned at shark tournament

Cue the "Jaws" theme.

The shark fishing tournament season is under way in Montauk, an epicenter for the sport that means big business for the tiny village on the eastern tip of Long Island.

It also brings in wildlife advocates who say sharks shouldn't be killed for sport. Protesters plan to be in Montauk this weekend when the Star Island Yacht Club launches its shark fishing tournament, which offers $1 million in prizes.

Tournament organizers say federal fishing regulations limit the daily catch to one shark per boat and many of the sharks get released if they're too small.

Last year, nearly 250 boats took part in the event, bringing in 44 sharks to the dock.

Legendary shark hunter Frank Mundus is scheduled to attend this weekend's tournament. Now retired and living in Hawaii, Mundus is the inspiration for the Captain Quint character in "Jaws."
