Two agencies have approved an agreement to deepen the Delaware River shipping channel.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Philadelphia Port Authority approved a partnership agreement for the five-year, $379 million project. Supporters say it would allow more ships to use the channel, which would be deepened from 40 to 45 feet.

A spokesman for the Army Corps says it will still be at least a year before dredging begins. More approvals are still needed, including a dredging permit from the state of Delaware. The project is expected to take five years once it gets under way.

Gov. Ed Rendell says the approval marks a huge step for the project, which has been discussed for 15 years.
