What is a Hurricane?

Dateline article| David Murphy|

A hurricane is a large storm that forms in warm, tropical waters, often survives for days or weeks and can contain some of the most powerful weather-related winds on earth. Hurricanes also typically produce heavy rain and large, damaging waves. Hurricanes are categorized, based on top wind speed. In order to be classified as a hurricane, the storm's top winds must reach at least 74 miles-per-hour.
