Judge restores protections for wolves

A federal judge has restored endangered species protections for gray wolves in Montana, Wyoming and Idaho.

The wolves were removed from the protected list in March.

The new order will halt plans to hold public wolf hunts in the Northern Rockies this fall. The judge is deciding whether to make the preliminary injunction permanent.

State officials and representatives of the livestock industry say they're disappointed with the ruling.

Government attorneys are expected to decide next week whether to appeal.
