The mothers of four children who died in a March 9 house fire in eastern Pennsylvania are suing the landlord. The lawsuit alleges that Robert Mantz failed to have the Bethlehem home properly inspected and did not provide working smoke detectors and fire escapes.

The suit was filed Monday in Northampton County Court. It seeks unspecified damages.

Fire officials have said the blaze was accidentally sparked by candles. They said one smoke detector was in the basement, but the batteries had been removed.

The victims were 5, 8, 11 and 13 years old.

Mantz pleaded guilty and paid a fine for failing to obtain a certificate of occupancy for the home.

He did not immediately return a message left Tuesday by The Associated Press.
