US Airways seeks year-round Philly-Israel service

PHILADELPHIA (AP) - August 19, 2008 The Tempe, Ariz.-based airline announced on Tuesday it is making application to start service in July 2009, subject to approval by the United States and Israeli governments.

The airline would offer one daily nonstop flight.

At more than 5,700 miles, the Tel Aviv route would be the longest nonstop segment in the US Airways network, and would be served by newer, longer-range Airbus A330-200 aircraft set for delivery in spring 2009.

US Airways began service from Philadelphia to London's Heathrow airport in March 2008.

Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter says the airline is working to make its Philadelphia hub a major international gateway.
