A new use for butter

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) - August 20, 2008

How about butter biodiesel?

Today, the butter sculpture is being unveiled at the New York State Fair.

The nearly half-ton of butter will be converted into fuel when the fair ends.

The butter-to-biodiesel project is the work of students at the State University of New York's College of Environmental Science and Forestry.

Grad student Dan Nicholson notes butter is already 80 percent fat and oil.

The conversion process removes remaining water and protein.

Nicholson says the 900 pounds of butter will result in 96 gallons of biodiesel.

No word, though, on recycling toast.
