The Delaware National Guard says state Attorney General Beau Biden's guard unit will be deployed to Iraq on Oct. 3 and will be overseas for about a year.

Beau Biden and his staff did not return calls from the (Wilmington, Del.) News Journal on Tuesday night. However, his office has said it has been preparing for a deployment since Biden received an "alert order" in February.

Biden has said his office would operate smoothly if he were to be sent abroad. His second-in-command is former attorney general and former judge Richard Gebelein.

Biden is a member of the 261st Signal Brigade. He is a captain and a military lawyer in the Judge Advocate General's Corps. Biden is the son of U.S. Sen. Joe Biden, a potential vice presidential running mate for Sen. Barack Obama.
