Wilmington bishop released from hospital

WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) - August 25, 2008 Bishop Michael Saltarelli was admitted to Christiana Care Medical Center Hospital in Newark on Aug. 14 and diagnosed with an inflammation of the spine. A diocese spokesman says he was discharged Saturday and is now resting at home under a doctor's care.

The 75-year-old has reached the Catholic church's mandatory retirement age and will be succeeded as bishop next month by Bishop Francis Malooly, an auxiliary bishop for the Archdiocese of Baltimore.

In a letter published in the diocesan newspaper, Saltarelli wrote that he went to the hospital after feeling pain while walking, but strength was returning to his legs.
