300,000 NJ voters told they're not registered

TRENTON, N.J. - September 9, 2008 - State officials blame a fact-checking system that compares motor vehicle records with state voter rolls. The systems flags voters when information, such as their birthday, doesn't match.

Letters were mailed to voters Atlantic, Bergen, Burlington, Camden, Cape May, Cumberland and Essex counties.

Between 850,000 and 870,000 letters will be mailed in all.

State officials say those who receive letters should confirm their voter status with municipal clerks and the county election board.

The majority of Bergen County residents who called turned out to be registered.
