Report: Rutgers short on stadium fundraising

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (AP) - September 10, 2008

The Star-Ledger of Newark reports /*Rutgers*/ University has only raised a fraction of what is needed to cover a $30 million gap in funding for the project.

Records show one of the few large contributions came from New Jersey Gov. Jon S. Corzine, who gave $1 million.

There was nearly $93,000 in additional donations as of Sept. 3, hardly the millions Rutgers was hoping to raise.

Nearly all the contributions were less than $1,000. Many gave $50.

Rutgers turned to private donors after the state refused to cover part of the cost of the $102 million stadium.

University officials are downplaying the lackluster fundraising.
