Protack drops out of Delaware governor's race

WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) - September 11, 2008 Despite earning only 28 percent of the vote against retired judge Bill Lee in Tuesday's GOP primary, Protack was assured a spot on the November ballot as the Independent Party of Delaware's candidate.

But Protack, an airline pilot who has run unsuccessfully for statewide office several times, stunned the audience at a candidate forum Thursday night in Wilmington, announcing that he was quitting the race.

Protack, who has made two unsuccessful bids for governor and one for U.S. Senate, said he had no desire to quit the race, but that "it's the right thing to do."
