20 militants, 5 guards killed in Afghan fighting

KABUL, Afghanistan - September 12, 2008 - An official says the gunfight that followed killed 10 insurgents and five Afghan guards. The governor of Farah province says three other guards are missing and are believed to have been captured by the militiants.

Elsewhere, the U.S.-led coalition says troops killed more than 10 militants and detained two others in two separate raids. According to a statement, one of the raids targeted an insurgent commander involved in roadside bomb attack.

The other raid targeted a network headed by the son of a longtime warlord. He is alleged to be behind a number of beheadings and massive bombings.

More than 4,100 people, most of them militants, have died in insurgency-related violence in Afghanistan this year, according to figures compiled by The Associated Press.
