Rash of robberies in Center City

CENTER CITY - September 26, 2008 - Police are extremely concerned about this string of armed robberies because they are happening right in the heart of Center City.

The man police are looking for is 47-year-old Kevin McCray. Police say he's responsible for nine armed robberies in Center City since the beginning of the month.

Investigators say McCray will enter a store, browse around, then threaten the clerk. If the clerk does not hand over cash, police say he sometimes presents a black handgun, or simply tells the worker he's armed.

Police say McCray then vanishes among the pedestrians on the street. They do not believe he has a bicycle or car.

Detectives say McCray has struck three times this week. The most recent robbery happened around 11:00 a.m. Friday in the 1400 block of Walnut Street.

Police say McCray has 27 priors starting in the 1980s. 18 of those were for robberies. His most recent arrest was in August when he allegedly robbed a Wawa.

Authorities describe McCray as 5'6" to 5'8" tall, 160 pounds, and was wearing a black and blue sweatshirt with white shoes and blue pants.

Police believe McCray is armed and dangerous.
