Someone is stealing '666' road signs

BARNEGAT, N.J. (AP) - September 30, 2008

A spokesman for the New Jersey Turnpike Authority says metal signs at 66.6 mile markers keep disappearing.

Within the past two years, the 66.6 mile marker signs have been stolen at least four or five times from the New Jersey Turnpike and Garden State Parkway.

Officials say it's been happening all over the country, particularly on roads with names like Route 666.

They aren't sure if the thefts are being committed by religious zealots, Satanic scavenger hunters, or thrill-seeking college students searching for dorm decor.

Turnpike authorities in New Jersey say they suspect the thief is someone with a "devil may care" attitude.
