AC Council weighs 1-year delay for smoking ban

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) - October 8, 2008 That's what the city council in Atlantic City will consider Wednesday night when it comes to a casino smoking ban scheduled to take effect in a week.

The city's 11 casinos are hurting from the worsening economy and fierce competition from slots parlors in Pennsylvania and New York.

Casinos say the smoking ban will drive away smoking customers - and their money - at a time when the gambling halls can least afford it.

But many casino workers feel betrayed and angry that a hard-won law to protect their health may be scrapped in the name of profits.

The council will consider postponing the start of the ban for a year.
