Deadline nears for stimulus check applications

Thousands of New Jerseyans will lose out on their federal economic stimulus rebate checks if they don't apply by Oct. 15. The state's Public Advocate, Ron Chen, says nearly 120,000 seniors and disabled people in New Jersey have not tried to claim their money.

Eligible residents receive $300 to $600.

People who are on fixed incomes such as Social Security Retirement, Social Security Disability or VA benefits can apply, as can taxpayers who don't normally make enough to file a tax return. People receiving only SSI do not qualify, however.

Local libraries have copies of the application form and county offices on aging can help people fill it out.
