According to investigators, the man was walking through the 800 block of Carpenter Street around 1:20 p.m. when the woman walked up to the man, pointed a gun at him, and demanded money.
Instead of handing over cash, police say the man struggled with the woman, and the gun went off, but no one was hit.
The man was able to get the gun away, and the woman fled the area.
The 82-year-old man received a laceration on his arm during the struggle, but otherwise was not seriously hurt.
The would-be thief is described as an African-American woman with light complexion, 25 years old and five feet tall.
An investigation continues.
