Fire does $1 million in damage to shopping mall

WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) - October 26, 2008 The State Fire Marshal's Office says the blaze Sunday morning at Independence Mall caused more than $1 million in damage. Six businesses were affected.

The fire was reported shortly after 4 a.m. The Talleyville Fire Company was first on the scene, and the fire quickly went to a second alarm, bringing seven other fire companies to the mall. They were able to bring the flames under control in about an hour.

No one was injured, and the cause of the fire is under investigation. The worst damage was sustained in a second-floor office and dance studio. Businesses on the first floor were damaged by smoke and water.

The unaffected businesses were able to reopen Sunday afternoon.
