Historic jeweler closes eastern Pa. store

EASTON, Pa. (AP) - November 6, 2008 Revolutionary War Veteran Christian Bixler III started Bixler's Jewelers in Easton in 1785. Bixler's operated at two other locations before opening the current Easton store in 1925.

Chief Executive Officer Joyce Mitman Welken says the Easton store will close in January or early February, a victim of changing tastes and the economic slump.

An inventory clearance will begin Nov. 19, and five employees are expected to lose their jobs.

Welken says the Bixler's in Whitehall Township will continue operating, and the company is pursuing options to open a new store along the Route 33 corridor.
