Sunken car found, 1 dead inside

ODESSA, Del. - November 16, 2008 The Delaware State Police are currently on scene of a vehicle crash that occurred at approximately 5:39 pm Sunday on US 13 in the area of Appoquinimink River.

Troopers responded to the area after a witness called 911 reporting they observed an unknown vehicle traveling southbound on US 13 when it left the roadway and entered the center grass median. This occurred just prior to the southbound lane bridge that crosses the Appoquinimink River.

The vehicle was observed traveling down the embankment, in between the southbound and northbound bridges, and then entering the waterway. Witnesses reported to police they immediately stopped and looked into the waterway and observed the vehicle floating eastbound in the waterway.

These witnesses also reported the vehicle floated a short distance before it completely sank underwater. Troopers arrived on scene and have observed tire impressions in the grass that supports what the witnesses have provided.

Currently, members of the Odessa and Port Penn fire companies are assisting DSP with a through search of the area. This search includes boats and scuba divers. At this time no vehicle and no persons have been located. Because of the crash the northbound and southbound lanes in the area of the crash are closed. Motorists should seek alternative routes.

The car was recovered later in the night and one person was found dead inside.
